Visit Again? Yes
Known for its sun-kissed tanned beaches, nightlife, and luxurious feel, there isn’t any reason not to visit Cabo. Mexico has been a hotspot for American tourists due to its close vicinity, affordable price, and lenient restrictions compared to other parts of the world. Mexico is one of the few countries that allow U.S. citizens to enter without a Covid test as well as no mandatory quarantine. Cabo is known for its high profile visitors such as Will Smith and the Kar-Jenner clan, but these days even a Z-list celeb like me can enjoy the luxe lifestyle. I spent 4 nights in this beautiful city and would return unquestionably. I spent most of my time here relaxing rather than being adventurous.
Getting There
Now Cabo isn’t exactly cheap to get to from New York. I purchased a one way since I was going to be exploring Mexico. I paid a whopping $235 (Delta Airlines) and this flight had a layover. However, I did purchase it only two weeks in advance. I did notice that the flight prices were significantly less from cities like Los Angeles (around $75 one way and nonstop!). I would recommend watching/tracking flights.
Getting around & Safety
Luckily Uber is available and fairly inexpensive. Uber is not allowed at the airport, which isn’t uncommon. When you arrive, you can only use an authorized airport taxi. The taxi’s literally TAX! I was quoted $90 for my ride to my hotel which is by Cabo Marina. I talked them down to $50 and my Uber returning was $30. Cabo is known to be generally safe, but we should always proceed with the utmost caution every time we are traveling by avoiding sketchy areas. During my time, I felt completely safe getting from point A to point B.
where to stay
I stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Los Pedegral. This is a high-end luxury resort, that I was able to score for at a great rate with my American Express travel credit card. I enjoyed my stay and loved how everyone knew our names. I used not even half of my reward points of 70,000 points and paid $350 out of pocket for my 4 nights at the 5-Star resort. My Amex perks included a complimentary night, free upgrade, complimentary unlimited breakfast every morning, guaranteed late check-out at 4 pm, and $150 resort credit that we used for dinner. Not bad for Travel + Leisure’s number 1 resort in Cabo. All of these values persuaded my decision.
LUXE
If you have the funds (please do not go into debt trying to flex) and would love a luxe resort for your special occasion, here a few high accommodations that I would recommend:
Viceroy
Las Ventanas
Le Blanc
Nobu Hotel
Moderate
You do not have to stay at an expensive top-rated resort to have a great time in Cabo, There are many beautiful resorts that won’t break the bank. Always remember that there isn’t a specific price tag for an everlasting experience. Here are a few:
Cabo Azul
Mirador Del Cabo
ME Cabo
Playa Grande Resort
Budget
Casa Dorada Los Cabos
SIX TWO FOUR Urban Beach Hotel
Hotel El Ganzo
Hacienda Encantada Resort & Spa
Things to do
Cabo is notorious for its water activities. Head down to the marina where they are numerous tourism booths and never forget to negotiate for the best deals! In addition to the marina, remember to utilize Airbnb experiences. Here you can find many unique excursions and activities that will make your trip memorable. See the Airbnb experiences here.
Drive The Boat
Price: $40/$300+
What better way to live your best life than catching a tan on a yacht passing by the popular Cabo Arch. You can feel like you are in Amalfi Coast for the moment since they have a similar arch. Whether you’re on a yacht or a catamaran, the experience will be like no other.
Beach Day
Price: FREE (We luh that)
Cabo have some of the most unique sand I have ever see. The sand is literally a sun-kissed bronze. It is not encouraged to swim here because of the aggressive waves that the Pacific Ocean is known for.
ATV
Price: $30+
ATV is a favorite for many adventurous folks. There is the option for ATV and UTV that takes you around Cabo.
Snorkeling/Sailing cruise
Price: $25/$50
For you water lovers, Cabo is perfect for you. You can choose from a day or evening sail out in the ocean or snorkeling. There are also many cruises that also combine snorkeling.
Cooking Class/ Mezcal Tasting
Price: $40
What better way to enjoy Mexican food than to enjoy your own creation. You can learn a new recipe that will also be a conversation flex when you go back home, “Oh this recipe? I learned it while in Cabo a few years ago”.
Beach Clubs
Price:$$-$$$$
You can find something cozy or something ballerific. Beach clubs are well known in Cabo for good eats while listening to great music. Be cautious about the capacity and Covid measures. A few well-known ones are:
Mango Deck
Cachet Beach Club
Blue Marlin Ibiza Los Cabos
Camel or Horse Eco-Adventure
Price: $35
I am not big on riding animals anymore, but if you’re into that stuff this is a non-judgemental zone. Do your thing.
where to eat
Always remember to ask for bottled water in Mexico. Do not take any chances with “filtered” tap water. We do not want any mishap like Charlotte from Sex and the City.
I was stunned to learn how diverse the cuisines were in Cabo. I had a taste of authentic Mexican to Japanese and Indian-Asian. There are many restaurants to choose from. Here are the ones that I checked out.
El Farallon
El Farallon is located on the property of Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedegral. We ate here for a total of $7 each, yes you read correct, $7! As I stated above, I received a $150 resort credit with my stay at Waldorf Astoria. Our grand total was $168.70.
A beautiful cliff-side seafood restaurant that did not disappoint. El Farallon offers a 4-course menu for a decent price of $59. Being that we are not drinkers we had sparkling water for the table. This definitely kept the bill under control. I had the chose seabass for my entree, roasted brussels sprouts with bacon and pastel azteca as my sides. Included was also an appetizer sample to share that consisted of falafel, ceviche, and cob salad. For dessert were assorted cakes. I would highly recommend this restaurant.
Nido
Nido is located on the breathtaking property of Viceroy Los Cabos. As I planned for Cabo there was a toss-up between a few luxury resorts. We went with Waldorf Astoria because it offered the best perks. A hotel that was also an option was Viceroy because of the water flushed resort. Since I didn’t stay there I checked out the property by booking dinner at Nido, a Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant. I went for a Tako - Taco with a side of sweet potatoes. Tako is actually Japanese for octopus so I ate an octopus taco. If you are an octopus lover then this is right up your alley. This place is very unique and the property definitely makes it worthwhile. My total cost was about $30.
Arbol
Arbol is located on the property of Las Ventanas. Walking to your seat will feel like a magical fairytale, just take a look at the pics. This is an Indian-Asian restaurant. Again I went with an octopus curry dish that was decent, Dev had chicken in a butternut sauce. I preferred the butternut sauce. Even the desert was posh. My total cost was about $35
Captain Tony’s
Captain Tony’s is located right at the marina. For some authentic cuisine complete with entertainment and at a great price, Captain Tony’s is the place to be. I recommend the blackened seabass along with a daiquiri. My total cost was about $20 for a drink and blackened sea bass,
TIPS
In order to live your best A-List luxury life, you don’t have to break the bank. Instead of staying at a high-end luxury resort, you can opt for lunch, dinner, or a day spa pass. As you can see it is not that expensive, but keep in mind I am not a drinker.
Be sure to make reservations, since establishments are at limited capacities. You don’t want to miss out because of this.
As for excursions, you get better deals in person as opposed to booking online. When in-person you have a better chance at negotiating. Remember to always negotiate, what’s the worst that can happen?
There was a curfew of 10 pm and 11 pm for nightlife due to the madness that’s going on.
Cabo is taking the necessary precautions with wash/sanitization stations throughout the city. Their main focus is health.
Hotels were at 30% capacity making social distancing a breeze.
Restaurants close by 10 p.m. and nightlife by 11 p.m.
Masks are mandated and everyone is respecting and abiding by the rules.
There are hand washing stations throughout the town.
If you haven’t noticed already, I definitely would recommend visiting Cabo. Be sure to let me know how it went!
